The All Important Vagus Nerve

The vagus nerve, also known as the tenth cranial nerve or simply the “wandering nerve,” is a crucial part of the autonomic nervous system that runs from the brainstem down through the neck, chest, and into the abdomen. It plays a pivotal role in regulating numerous bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, and even the body’s stress response. Stimulating the vagus nerve can have various health benefits, as it promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Methods to stimulate the vagus nerve include deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation. One of the biggest contributors to illness and disease is the Standard American Diet.  There is much information out there about what is “healthy” and what is not.  Let me make this simple for you:

It is NOT healthy to eat foods that are dead.  Foods that have chemical preservatives, food dyes, and shelf lives of months or years.  In Kindergarten, my son made me a Mother’s Day card at school where he glued Froot Loops onto a piece of construction paper.  He is now 33 years old.  I still have the card.  Thanks to the food preservatives, the Froot Loops are still there, looking like they did when they came out of the box 27 years ago.  This does not nourish your body in any way to eat these.

Your Symptom Is A Gift!

We tend to think of a symptom as a pesky little problem that we need to get rid of.  I disagree!  I think that our symptoms are a gift to alert us that something is wrong.  I liken it to the “check engine” light coming on in our car.  That is a friendly little notification that something is wrong under the hood.  We don’t pull out a baseball bat and smash out the light!  We look under the hood, or take our car to a mechanic to check things out for us.  

Having a symptom such as a rash, or pain, or heartburn is common.  It is not “the problem” though.  It is a downstream indication that something is wrong upstream.  Going to drugs and surgery to get rid of the symptom does not solve the problem.  However, if we take the time t

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Sitting on top of each of your kidneys is a small, triangle-shaped gland called your adrenal gland.  While it has many functions, one of its main jobs is to produce a hormone called Cortisol to help us deal with stressors.  Stressors can be a “bad” stressor like an illness, financial stress, relationship issues, loss of a job, etc., or it can be a “good” stressor like moving to a new home, getting married, running a marathon or getting a new job.  Either way, our bodies release Cortisol to help us through stressful times.  We are designed to have a rise in Cortisol with a stressful event, and then a return to homeostasis a short time later when the stressful event is over.  However, in this day and age, we are subjected to multiple chronic stressors that just do
