Sitting on top of each of your kidneys is a small, triangle-shaped gland called your adrenal gland. While it has many functions, one of its main jobs is to produce a hormone called Cortisol to help us deal with stressors. Stressors can be a “bad” stressor like an illness, financial stress, relationship issues, loss of a job, etc., or it can be a “good” stressor like moving to a new home, getting married, running a marathon or getting a new job. Either way, our bodies release Cortisol to help us through stressful times. We are designed to have a rise in Cortisol with a stressful event, and then a return to homeostasis a short time later when the stressful event is over. However, in this day and age, we are subjected to multiple chronic stressors that just don’t go away. Living life in the fast lane, eating a poor diet, having no margin or downtime in our schedule, social media and technology 24/7. We burn the candle at both ends AND in the middle! This takes a huge toll on our adrenal glands. They will produce as much Cortisol and they can for as long as they possibly can. Once they begin to wear out, we will begin to feel the symptoms of adrenal fatigue. Sleep issues, especially waking up not feeling rested. Fatigue, sometimes debilitating and worse in the afternoons or early evening. We start craving sugar and caffeine to give us an energy surge. We notice dryer skin, lower libido, foggy thinking, and dizziness upon changing positions.
This adrenal fatigue is setting the stage for Metabolic Chaos that affects every system of the body - Immune function, Digestion, Detoxification Pathways, Sex Hormones, and more. Conventional Medicine tends to treat to make the symptoms go away, but the underlying chaos is still present and creating greater dysfunction and disease.
